This barrier serves an important function, protecting the brain from neurotoxins, bacteria and viruses. But it also does not pass into the brain and drugs. And recently, Italian scientists were able to recreate this structure.
A group of specialists with the technology of 3D printing has created the blood-brain barrier with cerebrospinal fluid (she carries the power of the brain), microvascular and neurovascular system in 1:1 scale.
This development scientists actually extremely important. Because to develop effective drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease must overcome the blood-brain barrier without damaging it. The main problem at the moment is that there is now a specific biochemical mechanism responsible for the intersection of certain substances and molecules that barrier, it remains unknown why most drugs are tested empirically, and they needed a similar model of brain structures.
Experts from the Italian Institute of technology have created biogevity the blood-brain barrier, which allows the study of various drugs and nanopreparations and to assess their ability to cross this barrier. In addition, the invention provides the opportunity to examine the whole process, without using laboratory animals. As stated by one of the study’s authors, Gianni Ciofani,
“The system is called biohybrids because of a combination of artificial and biological elements. Capillaries made of nanotubes printed on a 3D printer method duttonii lithography, as well as from endothelial cells lining the frame. Our system allows you to simulate the process of overcoming the blood-brain barrier and to measure a number of indicators: the concentration of the drug, the speed of blood flow, acidity and temperature.”
