HTC has decided to refresh its virtual reality headset, Vive, and presented today at the international electronics show CES 2018 model Vive Pro. Original headset Vive appeared on the market almost two years ago, but this new one is designed to solve the shortcomings that have been associated with an earlier version of the headset. The main feature of the updated model are higher resolution and built-in headphones.

The approval of two OLED displays in the headset was increased to 2880 x 1600 pixels (1400 x 1600 pixels on the eye with a pixel density ppi 661). This is almost 78 percent increase in resolution compared to the original 2160 x 1200 (or 1080 x 1200 eyes) pixels. The increased resolution will improve the quality of the picture and make the text more clear and readable. The Oculus Rift headset and mixed reality from Microsoft quietly crying in the corner.

In addition to the increased resolution of HTC has also updated the design of the strap with which the device is fixed on the head, making it more convenient and providing built-in headphones. As noted by the owners of the original model Vive, one of its main drawbacks is the complexity of the optimal landing on his head and the weight distribution. In addition, the use of third-party headphones not only adds weight to the head, but also consumes additional wiring that may hinder the General perception of the virtual world. Vive Pro has a convenient system of adjustment of size, so it became more balanced and now will not put pressure on the forehead, as it was with the previous version.

In the upgraded headset added dual front-facing camera and two microphones. HTC believe that the developers of the apps and games will be able to find them to good use. In General, the device now looks less clumsy in comparison with the original version. Two front digital camera look like eyes, and this is perhaps one of the most conspicuous at first glance, the external differences from the first model, except that now the set presented in a blue-black color scheme. The company has not announced neither the release date nor the price of the updated device, but promised to inform about it in “the near future”.

It should be added that HTC Vive headset Pro is backward compatible with the system SteamVR-tracking versions 1.0 and 2.0, and for single headset you can use up to four base stations. HTC announced that sales of the original model will continue throughout 2018, and Vive Pro will arrive on the market during this quarter. The cost of the full kit and equipment will be announced later.

In addition to the announcement of the new headset, HTC also introduced updates, the store Viveport offering different content for virtual reality. Most of the users Vive, of course, often buy apps and games through SteamVR, but implementing the store function VR Previews, allowing to evaluate the content before buying, will certainly be able to attract some users, Vive Pro and Vive.

In conclusion should be said about the announcement of the wireless module Vive Wireless Adapter – a separate device that will work as standard with the HTC Vive, and Vive Pro and will make the headset completely wireless. Vive Wireless Adapter will be available in the third quarter of 2018. The price is not yet reported.
