The meeting is convened on the initiative of the United States, Russia and several other countries oppose the discussion of the Iranian protests in the security Council
The UN Security Council on Friday will hold an emergency meeting on the events in Iran. It will pass in conditions when the USA are calling for “change” in the Islamic Republic, and Russia condemns what she sees as “attempts to interfere” in the internal Affairs of Iran.
USA on Thursday filed a formal request for a meeting, but Russia and a number of other members of the security Council are not convinced that this body should discuss the unrest in Iran, say the diplomats.
The session is scheduled for 3 p.m., said the mission of Kazakhstan, which currently chairs the security Council.
Russia criticized the US efforts in organizing the meeting. It is unclear whether to attempt some of the members of the Council to block the meeting by a procedural vote.
Diplomats believe that Russia may seek a procedural vote earlier in the meeting to decide whether to discuss the situation in Iran.
For the issuance of a new item on the agenda of the Security Council, it is necessary that the idea was supported by at least 9 of the 15 members. The right of veto in such voting shall not apply.
In recent days, the United States actively lobbied for hosting the meeting, especially among the six new non-permanent members of the security Council, say diplomats.
From 1 January in the membership of the Council included, côte d’ivoire, Kuwait, Peru, Poland, the Netherlands and Equatorial Guinea.
US Ambassador Nikki Haley earlier this week said he wants to seek of the meeting to show support for the demonstrators.
“The Iranian people demand freedom, she said on Tuesday. All freedom loving people should support them in this endeavor”.
But on Thursday, a senior Russian diplomat warned the United States against the attempts of what he described as “attempts to interfere in the internal Affairs” of Iran and is skeptical about the appeal of Washington to hold a meeting of the UN security Council devoted to the unrest in Iranian cities.
“We warn the US against attempts to interfere in the internal Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran”, – said the Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Ryabkov in an interview to the government news Agency TASS.
He called what is happening in Iran “internal affair” that draws the attention of the international community
According to him, the United States deliberately using the situation in Iran to try to undermine the stability of the nuclear agreement.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald trump and Vice-President Mike Pence has issued appeals to “change” in Iran and expressed support for the participants of anti-government protests.
“It does not honor our American colleagues,” – said the Deputy head of the Russian foreign Ministry.
Commenting on the appeal of the USA to convene a meeting of the UN security Council on the situation in Iran, Ryabkov stressed that the internal processes in the Republic have no relation to the statutory functions of the UN security Council.
“The Security Council is the body which has primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, he said. – Internal processes in Iran, as in any other country, to the statutory functions of the UN security Council have no relationship”, – the Russian diplomat said Ryabkov.
During the protests in Iran that began on 28 July, 21 people died and several hundred were arrested.
Hayley said that she intends to ask the Council for human rights of the UN to discuss violence in Iran.
It is expected that the Council will not publish a statement about the situation in Iran, because this requires the consent of all 15 members.
The permanent representative of Iran to the UN gholamali khoshrou on Wednesday sent a letter to the Security Council and the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres, accusing the US of meddling in the internal Affairs of his country and condemned Washington’s statement.
“The President and Vice-President of the United States for its many absurd tweets incite Iranians to destructive actions,” the letter reads.
The US President Donald trump has promised to help the Iranians “to regain control” over the government.
