On Thursday died a famous American historian Richard pipes. In recent years he has held the position of Professor of Russian history at Harvard University and headed the University’s Research centre for the study of Russia.
Richard pipes was born in Poland 1923. After the outbreak of the Second world war his family emigrated to the United States, where the future historian entered the service in military intelligence.
In the 70-ies of the pipes was the chief scientific consultant of the Center for Russian studies at Stanford University. Later, Advisor to several U.S. presidents on the problems associated with the Soviet Union. In the early 1980s he headed the Soviet division of the Council of national security of the United States.
Richard pipes was a consistent anti-Communist and supported the dissident movement in the USSR. Already in the 90-ies he became a member of the American Committee for peace in Chechnya.
The author of 23 books on the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, Richard pipes became widely known. Some of his works have been translated into Russian language.
