Donald Trump unloads on ‘disgusting’ and ‘illegal’ Robert Mueller investigation to mark one-year anniversary

Donald Trump has marked the one-year anniversary of the special counsel’s Russia investigation with a heated early morning tweetstorm calling it “disgusting” and “illegal”. In a mocking message on Twitter, the US president wrote: “Congratulations America, we are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History.” He also repeated claims that a “confidential informant” had “spied” on the Trump campaign before the election for the FBI, declaring: “If so, this is bigger than Watergate!” The accusation appears to be linked to a suggestion by the man who commissioned the Christopher Steele dossier on Mr Trump’s Russia ties that someone in the campaign became a whistleblower.  A string of new details emerged in the US media on Thursday in pieces marking the one-year mark of Robert Mueller’s appointment as special counsel.  He was tasked with leading the Russian election-meddling investigation after James Comey, the FBI director, was fired by the president.  Mr Trump at the time said "I look forward to this matter concluding quickly” and his lawyers briefed that they expected the investigation to be done by Christmas 2017.  However the probe has now widened in scope and continues to hang over the presidency as it looks into accusations of Russian collusion, obstruction of justice and Kremlin election interference. The New York Times reported that the FBI’s initial investigation into Russian activity before the 2016 presidential election had been code-named “Crossfire Hurricane”.  The inspiration for the name was the lyrics of a Rolling Stones song: “I was born in a crossfire hurricane, and I howled at the morning driving rain.” The paper also reported that the FBI secretly investigated Australia’s London ambassador before the vote. He had reportedly been told by a Trump campaign aide that Russia had dirt on Hillary Clinton, Mr Trump’s Democratic rival.  It remains unclear whether Mr Trump will agree to Mr Mueller’s request for an interview as part of the investigation, with talks between the pair’s legal teams having gone on for months without conclusion. Rudy Giuliani, recently appointed Mr Trump’s personal lawyer, claimed that Mr Mueller has admitted he cannot  indict the president, which means bring criminal charges against him.  Mr Trump tweeted:  Congratulations America, we are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History…and there is still No Collusion and No Obstruction. The only Collusion was that done by Democrats who were unable to win an Election despite the spending of far more money!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 17, 2018 Wow, word seems to be coming out that the Obama FBI “SPIED ON THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN WITH AN EMBEDDED INFORMANT.” Andrew McCarthy says, “There’s probably no doubt that they had at least one confidential informant in the campaign.” If so, this is bigger than Watergate!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 17, 2018 Despite the disgusting, illegal and unwarranted Witch Hunt, we have had the most successful first 17 month Administration in U.S. history – by far! Sorry to the Fake News Media and “Haters,” but that’s the way it is!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 17, 2018
