Press Secretary of the government of Germany has announced that October 19 will be held in Berlin meeting in the “Normandy format”. Yesterday in the Kremlin said that the chances of such a meeting is “small”
The presidents of Russia, France and Ukraine, as well as German Chancellor agreed to meet in the “Normandy format” in Berlin on 19 October, writes Reuters with reference to the official representative of the government of Germany Steffen Seibert.
According to him, Angela Merkel has invited other members of the “Norman Quartet” in Berlin for talks. Discussed will be the implementation of the Minsk agreements, as well as “further steps” to resolve the situation in Ukraine, Seibert said.
Bild, also with reference to the press Secretary of the government of the Steffen Seibert, said that Putin will take part in the meeting in “Norman format”. This is his first trip to Germany after the annexation of Crimea, the newspaper said.
The press service of the Ukrainian President reportedthat he had a phone conversation with Francois Hollande and Angela Merkel, in which the parties “agreed to hold on October 19 in Berlin the meeting of heads of state “channel format” with the aim to force Russia to fulfill the Minsk agreements in the part of security policy”.
Earlier that the meeting of leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine, scheduled for October 19 in Berlin, according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Ambassador of Russia in France Alexander Orlov. Press Secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov felt it premature to talk about negotiations and noted that in their preparation there are “problem areas”.
October 14, Peskov stressed that the exact date of the meeting and are not known. “It all depends on how, in fact, said President Putin, will be able to prepare the necessary conditions to achieve the necessary understandings, in order to gather heads of state, or will fail,” he said.
On the eve Peskov said that the chances of holding talks in the “Normandy format” is small. He pointed out that originally the meeting was scheduled to be held on October 19, however, “taking into account that the still clarity have been made and work at the level of assistant to the President in the respective directions have not yet given positive results, chances are very small”.
Ukraine offered to hold a meeting in the “Normandy format” at the G20 summit in China, however, once in the Crimea detained Ukrainian saboteurs, Putin questioned the necessity of meeting four. Later he agreed with Merkel and Hollande meeting in a trilateral format, but it did not take place. Instead, the Russian President met separately with German Chancellor and separately with the French leader.
Last meeting “channel four” took place on October 2 last year in France.
