Lithuanian President talked with the correspondent of the Ukrainian service of “Voice of America”
The President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, April 3 participated in the Baltic sea summit, in which President trump took the White house the leaders of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, gave an interview to the Ukrainian service of “voice of America”.
Touching the contents of the conversation Donald trump with Raimonds Vejonis, Dalia Grybauskaite and Kirsty Kaljulaid, the Lithuanian President noted that the summit touched on the subject of Ukraine. “When we discussed security in the region as a whole, the question was raised about the situation in Ukraine. We talked about the actions of Russia, on the security of Ukraine and the support Ukraine”, – said Grybauskaite.
She stressed that the US President is aware of the extent of the Russian threat. According to the President of Lithuania, trump “asked about the Ukrainian military, about being able to protect themselves.”
In connection with the discussed question of the Marshall plan for Ukraine, Grybauskaite said, “We’re trying to have a discussion in Europe on additional assistance to Ukraine”.
She also stressed that the summit participants discussed the issue of diversification of energy supplies and, in particular, on how to provide Europe with more choice, so she did not depend on monopoly.”The Baltic States are a good example of how it can be done. We opened LNG terminal in Klaipeda and can, if necessary, to deliver natural gas to the Baltic States. We have a choice to buy gas in Russia, in Europe or in the United States. This gives us a real independence, since Russia is using energy as a tool of political influence on other countries. To our surprise, Europe is moving in the opposite direction, they do not see this threat. We, on the other hand, experienced this threat by yourself. This is our history, our experience, and we do not want its recurrence. For Europe, we are real example of what can happen. We therefore hope that sooner or later they will understand that diversification of supply means political security and better prices for consumers,” – said Dalia Grybauskaite.
However, the President of Lithuania noted that “the main theme (of the summit) was the discussion on the reform of NATO, security in the region.”
“We strongly expressed the commitment of article 5 of the NATO Charter and all the necessary elements designed to make our region a safer and more secure,” – said Grybauskaite.
She also noted the understanding between the Baltic leaders and the US President.
“Given that we met him not for the first time, I can say that every meeting with him at the same time challenging and interesting,” she said.
