Former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, died Sunday, January 8, at the age of 82 after a heart attack, according to broadcaster Press TV.
Earlier that day, the Agency Reuters reported his hospitalization in connection with heart problems.
Rafsanjani was President of Iran 1989-1997. He was born in a poor family in 1934.
Before the Islamic revolution in 1979, Rafsanjani was involved in anti-government activities, a few times he was in prison.
In 1980, Rafsanjani became Chairman of the Majlis of Iran, and in August 1989, he was elected President of the country.
Rafsanjani supported the current President of Iran Hassan Rouhani. After retiring from the post of President Rafsanjani Chairman of the expediency Council, an Advisory body to the Ayatollah Khomeini, and was also Chairman of the Islamic consultative Assembly of Iran.
