The Chicago Council on global Affairs and “Levada-Center” has published the results of a new survey about the attitude of Americans and Russians towards each other

After allegations of Russian interference in the elections of 2016, the majority of Americans believe that the Russian authorities are trying to influence the internal politics of the United States.

This is indicated by the results of a new survey of public opinion.

However, a survey conducted in the US and Russia, suggests that still a large proportion of Russians believe that Washington is trying to interfere in the internal politics of Moscow.

Seventy-eight percent of the polled Russians indicated that the US is “seriously” or “substantially” interfere in Russian politics, compared with 69 percent of Americans who hold the same opinion about the Russian intervention in American politics.

These data were obtained as a result of the comparative surveys conducted by the Chicago Council on global Affairs and its Russian partner, the “Levada-Centre” at the end of last year.

Although the previous publication of the results of surveys conducted in the framework of their joint project, showed some commonality foreign policy goals of Washington and Moscow, a new publication dedicated to the tensions that arose last year after intense US presidential election in 2016 and because of other problems.

Only three percent of Russians believe that the U.S. is not trying to interfere in Russia’s internal Affairs, while seven percent of Americans said the same thing about Russia. In response to separate questions, 13% of Americans said that they do not believe that Russia tried to interfere in the election in 2016, despite the findings of U.S. intelligence.

At the same time, Russians are less inclined to blame their government for alleged interference in the United States. According to the survey, 31 percent of Russians believe that Moscow is making significant attempts to interfere in the internal Affairs of States. For comparison, 55 percent of Americans believe that their government is trying to do the same in Russia.

Survey data contain virtually no evidence of a “reset”.

Continuing a trend observed for several years, the Americans and the Russians show such a negative attitude, which was not observed since the cold war. Only 31 percent of Americans said they have a positive attitude to Russia. 24 percent of Russians said the same thing about the United States.

In January 2017, 46 percent of Russians believed that the election of Donald trump, which the Russian authorities often responded in a positive manner, can improve relations with the United States. However, few people today believe that positive changes have indeed occurred. Slightly more than half – 51 percent – of Russians believe that us-Russian relations has not changed, and 28 percent are confident that they have deteriorated.

In response to a request to list the countries that are enemies of Russia, 35 percent of Russians in the first place called US. No other country is in Russia this rejection.

For comparison, only 3 percent of Russians mentioned the terrorists.

As the Americans and Russians have a feeling that against their countries being subversive work. Eighty-one percent of Russians believe that the US is trying to undermine Russia’s position in the international arena, and 77 percent of Americans say the same thing about Russia.

Despite their mutual hostility, the data of the Chicago Council on global Affairs and “Levada-Center” point to some moments in which the Americans and the Russians agree.

So, in Russia, and the United States there is a General understanding that Moscow is playing an increasingly important role on the world stage. Fifty-six percent of Russians believe that Russia plays a more important role than ten years ago, and I agree with that 41 percent of Americans. For comparison, 47 percent of Americans believe that the role of the U.S. in ten years has decreased, and this opinion is shared by 32 percent of Russians.
