NanoRing — a new kind of transistors from Qualcomm

All modern electronics use transistors. Despite the rapid development of technology, the principle of operation of the transistor for the last time, little changed, but soon, thanks to Qualcomm we can expect a small technical revolution because of the emergence of a completely new transistor type, called NanoRing.

Earlier this year, Qualcomm experts, together with their colleagues from Applied Materials and Synopsys, have conducted calculations of mathematical models, five new types of transistors of the next generation. Unlike modern electronic transistors, in which the main element is a silicon “rib”, to pass current in the on state, NanoRing work differently. They represent a “sandwich” of three rectangular silicon channels. Each channel is surrounded by a layer of dielectric coated with a metal layer of the gate electrode — gate. The supply of electricity to the gate changes the electric field in the silicon that allows current to flow through it.

Despite the excellent results obtained in the calculations of mathematical models, a complete success too early to say. The first test of the NanoRing to be held in 2018, and if they are successful — Qualcomm is going to develop a smartphone based on the new transistors. If successful, this will be the phone that their work will consume several times less energy than existing models while maintaining the same performance.
