The UN General Assembly will consider a resolution condemning the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel
US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley warned representatives of other countries that will follow as they vote during scheduled for Thursday emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly. It will be considered a resolution condemning the US administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
“The President will pay very close attention to this vote. He asked me to tell him which countries voted against us, the letter said Haley, which read editorial “Voice of America”. We take note of every voice in the discussion of this question.”
Earlier this month, President trump, departing from long-standing US position, stated that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will begin the construction of the building in this city for the Embassy of the United States.
On Monday, the Security Council proposed a resolution expressing “profound regret for the recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem”.
The text of the resolution, where not directly referred to the decision of the United States, it is also stated that “any decisions and actions aimed at altering the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy city of Jerusalem have no legal force and are invalid and must be canceled.”
Fourteen of the fifteen security Council members supported the draft resolution, however, the U.S. has used its veto to block its adoption.
“No country can point to the United States, where we place our Embassy,” said Hailey Council members after the vote.
On Tuesday she wrote on Twitter:
“The UN we (Americans) are always asked to do and give more. So when we, by the will of the American people make a decision about where to place our Embassy, we do not expect that those who we have helped will be against us. Thursday will vote on a resolution critical of our decision. The US will take note who and how voted”.
Several diplomats said that he had received a letter from Hayley, but added that he does not plan to change its position.
“Our position on this matter absolutely clear. We had the opportunity to Express their opinion in the Security Council, so it’s a very principled position, – said the permanent representative of Sweden Olaf Skoog. – For us it is not relevant to the issue of bilateral relations with the United States, which are very favourable”.
An emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly was convened at the request of Palestinian representative, Riyad Mansour, with the support of Arab States and non-aligned countries.
Mansour on Monday told reporters that he hopes for “overwhelming support” in the consideration of the resolution. According to him, the Palestinians will continue to exert pressure to convince the administration to change trump’s position.
General Assembly resolutions are not obliged to comply with them, however, have significant moral weight as reflecting the position of the majority of members of the world community.
Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal capital, while Palestinians want to make East Jerusalem the capital of a future Palestinian state and declare that the US is no longer a reliable partner in the peace process.
The administration of the tramp declares that remains committed to a two-state solution in the Palestinian-Israeli question, if you want both sides, and that the location of the American Embassy should not influence the course of negotiations.
