The US is seeking the release of the pastor, which Turkey accuses of committing serious crimes
Secretary of state Mike Pompeo discussed with the Minister of foreign Affairs of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu, the release of American pastor Andrew Brunson. Branson is located in Turkey under house arrest, before 21 months he was in prison.
The details of the discussion are unknown. The U.S. state Department spokesman said that the two diplomats “intend to continue discussions to resolve this issue and other topics of concern to both sides.”
Release Branson has become an important issue for the US administration. President Donald trump and Vice-President Mike Pompeo warned Turkey about the possibility of sanctions if the pastor is released.
In Turkey Brunson is accused of terrorism and espionage, knowing that he assisted the organization of Fethullah Gulen, Muslim religious and community leaders living in the United States. The Turkish authorities accuse Gulen in the organization of the failed coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In the case of conviction, 50-year-old pastor can spend in prison for 35 years.
