According to an article published in the journal Science, scientists of the Moscow State University together with his colleagues developed new generation material. He has tremendous flexibility, but the most interesting thing that by its properties it resembles the skin of a chameleon and can change its color.
Tissues of many animals have rather unusual properties of tissues: they can strengthen its positions with increasing voltage, but the skin of chameleons, in addition, has one additional property: it is able to deform and change the color.
Changing colour of a chameleon depending on its condition
The group of experts under the leadership of Sergei Sheiko has developed a material that combines the mechanical properties of animal tissues with the ability to change color. Furthermore, the physical properties of the material are very much similar to the skin of pigs. To create a “chameleon skin” researchers used elastic triblock copolymers is a special connection of three. Central is a fragment of a branched structure, consisting of branched chains. With both sides of the Central layer are layers made of PMMA, which collect the polymer chains into a single network. Stretching and squeezing the material and thus altering the distance between the chains of PMMA, it is possible to change the color of the material. As explained by one of the authors Dmitry Ivanov,
“Until now, there was not a single synthetic material that could play such mechanics of living biological tissues. So our materials in the future may be the most unexpected applications. For example, now we think about intraocular implants. While we are still far from clinical trials, and in the nearest plans we think primarily about mechanical properties, but we also think about those properties that are associated with the optics.”
