Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin
Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin told about the development of the country’s withdrawal from the CIS and called himself a supporter of this step. He has previously said that Kiev not to hurry with the withdrawal from the CIS
Ukraine is considering the issue of withdrawal from the Commonwealth of independent States (CIS), told in the ether of the TV channel “112 Ukraine” the head of the foreign Ministry of the country Pavlo Klimkin.
“We are studying the issue [of the CIS],” said Klimkin in response to a replica of the flagship program, noting that he opposes the country’s withdrawal from the CIS. “We have several dozen agreements relating, for example, mutual recognition of diplomas, pension payments. And we are now completing work that will allow us to settle these agreements,” — said the Minister. “I am a supporter of withdrawal from the CIS”, — he added.
Last year Klimkin said that the country’s withdrawal from the CIS is still untimely. However, he called CIS a “political club” and “Soviet legacy”.
“But if we pull out of the Commonwealth now, the agreement “will fall”, complicating the lives of thousands and thousands of people. First understand, and then we’ll take further steps. In addition, we participate in events of the CIS, when we need to achieve something”, — said Klimkin.
The question of the possible withdrawal of Ukraine from the CIS began to sound after the change of power in the country in 2014. In March of the same year, the Council of national security and defence (NSDC) of Ukraine decided to terminate the presidency of Ukraine in CIS and announced the beginning of the process of withdrawal from the Commonwealth. In October of last year the Verkhovna Rada introduced a draft law on Ukraine’s withdrawal from the CIS, however, the document was never voted on.
Ukraine is a founding member state of the CIS under the agreement of 1991. Kiev has not ratified neither the Protocol on creation of the CIS, nor the Charter of the Commonwealth, under which the state is entitled from the Commonwealth to come out. According to the regulations, Kyiv must in writing notify the other members of the CIS to direct access.
