The new format of JPEG XS for virtual reality, drones and Autonomous cars


Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), the international Committee under the leadership of Professor EPFL, presented a new JPEG format XS. It allows you to compress the image using less power and send high quality images through the network with low latency like 5G. JPEG XS will find application in such areas as virtual reality, augmented reality, space visualization, self-driving cars and professional film editing.

Why do users of VR headsets sick? One reason is latency, or delay, almost imperceptible amount of time that you want to the image has changed in response to the movement of the user’s head. Experts presented a new JPEG standard for the compression of images, which can solve the issue. The work was conducted by a group of Turaga of Ebrahimi, Professor of school of engineering (STI) EPFL.

XS with JPEG images and video will be able to maintain the highest level of quality, by simplifying and speeding up the compression process and this would also mean energy efficiency. The compressed files will be bigger but not a problem for broadband data networks like Wi-Fi or 5G: the task to transfer files and not store them on smartphones or other devices with limited memory.

And that means you can use your smartphone, tablet or computer to project an HD movie or video games on the big screen almost instantly. Will not need any cables as the picture quality will be extremely high.

“For the first time in the history of the encoding of images, we began to compress less, to ensure the best preservation of quality, and has made the process faster and more ergonomic,” says Professor of Ebrahimi. “We want to be smarter in what we do. The idea is to use fewer resources and to dispose of them wiser. This is a real change of paradigm”.

JPEG compression, which has been popular for the past 25 years, commonly reduces the file size of an image by ten orders of magnitude. The compression process was developed so that images can be stored in cameras with limited memory and easily transferred across the network. However, come new challenges, new applications, more efficient data network and technological achievements. XS standard JPEG compresses files by six orders of magnitude and not necessarily replace the popular JPEG format. He’ll just find another use for, and a lot of them.
