The vote is scheduled for Monday
It is expected that the UN Security Council on Monday will put to the vote the draft resolution calling for cancellation of the decision of the President of the United States Donald trump on the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Apparently, the US will veto the resolution.
In a single-page draft resolution, which was prepared in Egypt and was available to Reuters, does not mention the United States or trump. Diplomats say that the document received wide support among the 15 members of the Security Council, and although it is unlikely to be approved, the vote will lead to further isolation of the trump in this matter.
For resolution must maintain nine members of the Council, provided that none of the permanent members – the US, France, Britain, Russia and China will not use the veto.
Earlier this month, President trump suddenly revised the longstanding policy of the United States recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The decision caused outrage among Palestinians. Trump also plans to move the U.S. Embassy from tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley called the decision trump “fair and right”. United States mission to the UN on Sunday was not available for comment.
The foreign Ministers of the Arab countries have agreed to work towards a resolution of the Security Council on this issue. The draft resolution expresses “deep regret at the recent decisions relating to the status of Jerusalem.”
The document confirms that “any decisions and actions that aim to change the nature, status or demographic composition of the Holy city of Jerusalem have no legal force invalid and must be cancelled under the relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”
The draft resolution also calls on all countries to refrain from opening diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.
Israel considers the city its eternal and undivided capital and wants there are based all embassies.
No vote or debate will not change the real situation, which is that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, said Saturday the Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon.
The Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state was in the Eastern sector of the city, which Israel captured during the 1967 war. The international community never recognized the annexation of East Jerusalem.
The draft resolution demands that “all States comply with the resolutions of the UN Security Council concerning the Holy city of Jerusalem, and did not recognize any actions or actions that are contrary to these resolutions.”
The resolution of the UN Security Council adopted in December 2016, it is emphasized that the security Council “will not recognize any changes of borders of 4 June 1967, including in relation to Jerusalem, except those that are recognized by the parties during negotiations.”
The resolution was approved by 14 votes in favor. The administration of former U.S. President Barack Obama abstained, despite a lot of pressure by Israel and trump, demanding that Washington used its veto.
