According to Washington, this could lead to the intensification of the crisis with the Rohingya Muslims
The United States condemned Russia for approval of sales of fighter jets to the armed forces of Myanmar, despite their operations against the Muslim Rohingya.
Washington warned that Moscow’s actions could lead to deterioration of the situation.
Representatives of the Ministry of defense of Russia took advantage of the visit to Myanmar this week to announce the agreement to supply six su-30 fighters for the armed forces of the country.
Russian officials said that Myanmar was also interested in purchasing Russian warships and ground-based weapons.
State Department spokesman Heather Nauert called the decision of Russia on the supply of fighters “a good example of the challenges we face when working with certain governments.”
According to her, most of the world wants the crisis with the Rohingya have been settled by peaceful means, and Russia’s actions may instead lead to more suffering and instability.
“It seemed that this would be the case when Russia can show solidarity with the delivery of humanitarian aid, and not a potential worsening of the situation through the sale of weapons,” said Neuert.
United States and many other countries refuse to sell arms to Myanmar.
Six fighters – this is not the first weapon that Myanmar buys from Russia.
In the past the country bought the MiG-29 fighter jets, combat training aircraft Yak-130, combat helicopters Mi-17, Mi-24 and Mi-35 and other weapons, said on Monday in Myanmar’s Deputy Minister of defense of Russia Alexander Fomin.
Fomin expressed confidence that Russian-Myanmar military technical cooperation will continue to develop and will allow Myanmar to build a modern force using high-tech Russian weapons.
