The United States urged Venezuela to abide by the Constitution and hold fair elections
U.S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson urged the Venezuelan government “to restore the rights of the legally elected Parliament, to dissolve the illegitimate Assembly and back to holding free, fair elections.”
Tillerson, who spoke in Mexico city at a joint press conference with the foreign Ministers of Mexico and Canada, stated that Venezuela expect peaceful transitions of power.
This statement was made after the ruling in Venezuela, United socialist party nominated the current head of state Nicolas Maduro as a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections, blocking his leading opponents. Elections are scheduled for April 30.
The U.S. claim that the upcoming elections will not be considered legitimate in the conditions, when the population of Venezuela is experiencing an incredible economic difficulties, not having access to essential commodities and medicines.
Earlier Tex Tillerson said that the US is not seeking regime change in Venezuela, however, will use all available political, diplomatic and economic tools to respond to the situation.
