To a state Department statement stressed the need of ensuring the rights of detained human rights defenders in accordance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation and its international obligations
The US state Department expressed concern about the arrest of the head of the “Memorial” in the Chechen Republic Ouba Titieva. As noted by the press-Secretary of the foreign office of the United States Heather Nauert, this latest violation of human rights in Chechnya.
“We call on the Chechen authorities to immediately release Titieva and allow independent civil society to operate without fear of harassment and intimidation. Given the legitimate concerns about possible ill-treatment Titanim detention, we urge the Federal authorities of Russia to protect the rights Titieva in accordance with the Russian Constitution and Russia’s obligations in the field of human rights”, – reads the statement of the state Department.
We will remind that on Tuesday morning, Chechen human rights activist was detained by police in Grozny. According to the official version, Titiev was suspected of transporting marijuana in his car, and he was “sent for a medical examination”.
