The U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Nikki Haley said that the international community is missing the opportunity to abandon nuclear weapons, in particular, because of the actions of the DPRK. She stated this to journalists before the conference opening of the UN General Assembly to develop a Convention on the complete prohibition of nuclear weapons, reports Reuters.
“At the present time and in this situation we, unfortunately, can’t honestly say that without nuclear weapons to protect our people, allowing bad actors to have it [a nuclear weapon. — RBC], as well as those of us who are trying to maintain peace and security,” the envoy said.
The American diplomat underlined that her biggest desire is able to allow her family to live in a world without nuclear weapons. “But we have to be realistic. Is there anyone who believes that North Korea will agree to abandon nuclear weapons?” added Haley.
The envoy added that the conference to elaborate a Convention on the prohibition of nuclear weapons will not be attended by almost 40 countries, including the US, UK and France. But we will never lag behind in any country, even if it is a friendly country, we will never keep up with nuclear energy,” said trump.
Earlier, on 23 March, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov saidthat Russia is ready to discuss reducing the nuclear Arsenal. At the same time, the Minister noted that such negotiations should be conducted “taking into account all factors.” The negotiations in the UN General Assembly Moscow boycottedbecause it considered them untimely.
